What is the Engineering Department?
The Engineering Department is made up of the following divisions:
- Civil Engineering
- Traffic Engineering
- Traffic Signal & Lighting
- Traffic Sign & Pavement Parking
- Parking
- Tree Commission
What does the Engineering Department do?

We maintain record documents and mapping for city roadways, bridges, sanitary sewers, and storm sewers.

We manage the design and construction of public works projects, such as roads, bridges, drainage infrastructure, and more.

- We issue permits and provide inspection services for excavations in public rights-of-way, sewer connections, construction of public curb and sidewalks, and driveway connections that connect to a public thoroughfare.
- We conduct site plan and subdivision plan reviews.

- We provide a courtesy review of Residential Site Plans as requested by the Zoning Inspector.
- We provide construction inspection services.
- We provide public right-of-way surveys.
- We provide addressing/house numbering services.
- We respond to traffic concerns and perform and review traffic studies.
- We maintain all traffic control devices in the City (traffic signals, signs, pavement markings, etc.).
- We manage and enforce all on-street and some off-street parking in the downtown area.
- We regulate storm water management for construction projects and development.
- We coordinate the City's Hike and Bike Trail System.

"Harmony of Trees" Arbor Day Celebration
The City of Canton is to celebrate Arbor Day on April 26, 2019, with the theme "Harmony of Trees".

Mayor Thomas M. Bernabei, the Canton Parks Commission, and the Canton Tree Commission are excited to announce the 6th Annual Arbor Day Celebration to be held on April 26, 2019. In connection with the Arbor Day Celebration, the Canton Tree Commission will be sponsoring a photography contest open to all residents of Stark County. This year's theme is "Harmony of Trees".
